YSAR IMAGES - Tel Safi Site

The BYU Synthetic Aperature Radar Systems

Tel Safi is believed to be the site of the ancient city of Gath, home of Goliath according to the Bible. The site is at the top of a small hill (tel). A more recent Arab settlement is also known to have been at this site.

From the ground, the site has little structure, as can be seen in the photograph provided. However, the SAR images and air photographs show geometric shapes, indicating rock walls which are not evident at close range.

A large power plant is near the site. This area is seen as a region of very bright returns near the bottom of pass 1200. Transmission line towers can also be seen in images which cover the nearby area.
